Washington, D.C.: 1945. 377 p. This is the first volume of a self-teaching textbook designed as a general introduction to spoken Turkish. It is a newly reformulated education of a text originally published for the armed forces in 1945. The method used in this manual requires either that a native speaker of Turkish be on hand during the course or that the recorded voice of a native speaker be used. Records and cassettes to accompany the course can be purchased. Book one is divided into two major parts, each containing five learning units and one unit devoted to review. Each unit contains several sections, usually the following: (1) basic sentences (with hints on pronunciation and spelling), (2) word study and review of basic sentences, (3) listening practice, and (4) conversation practice. Each learning unit is followed by a "Finder List" containing all the new words in the particular unit.
