Patrick George Z. Elementary Russian Reader
First Edition Reprinted. — New York, Chicago: Pitman Publishing Corporation, 1947. — 159 p.
The growing interest in the Russian language and the scarcity of elementary text-books in this field are responsible for the present reader. Although this book is adapted to Boiidar's Simplified Russian Method, it can be used advantageously with any other Russian grammar. The selections have been made with the purpose of giving in the form of simple narrative some information on Russian life, customs, and history. The stories of Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky, and Chekhov found here have been abridged and slightly changed, so as to make them suitable for beginners. It is my earnest hope that the matter presented here will be an incentive to the student to continue his work in the Russian language, and that it will serve as a foundation for later reading of historical and literary texts. The notes, although few in number, afford the explanations necessary for a clearer understanding of the
stories. In order to avoid tiresome cross-references, it has been thought expedient to provide this book with a vocabulary as complete as possible.
