While securing material for my many books, it has been my privilege to interview scores of men whose dangerous occupations were on land, on sea, in the air, under ground and under water.
Although most of them had been face to face with death many times, not one would admit that his job was perilous; indeed they insisted that, compared with others, their work was comparatively safe.
In the newspaper field I owe a debt of gratitude to the editors, reporters, photographers, darkroom operators and others whose patience and courtesies I will never forget.
I am particularly indebted to Associated Press for its invaluable co-operation and for the outstanding collection of news pictures with which this book is illustrated.
