Crespo Emilio. Elementos antiguos y modernos en la prosodia homérica
Salamanca : Universidad de Salamanca, 1977. — 108 p. — (Suplementos a "Minos" 7).
"It is an assumption almost universally made, that a verse credited to Homer must be metrically 'correct'. Since appearances often seem to contradict this assumption, appearances must be deceptive, and the scholar is set the task of defining the nature of 'licences'. This question may be approached in at least three ways: one may posit (1) metrical licences, i.e. that anomalies are permissible at certain points in the verse; (2) prosodic licences, i.e. that secondary realizations of a syllable obtain in certain environments; and (3) linguistic licences, i.e. that certain archaisms persist in the Kunstsprache when they have disappeared from the vernacular, and that these (and other misunderstood forms) give rise by analogy to a range of artificial but metrically convenient forms. The third approach, well known from Wyatt's Metrical Lengtbening (Rome, 1969), is now in fashion and Crespo follows it, but not without argument" (The Classical Review 30/2 (1980) 292).
