Doherty Joseph C., Markus Roberta Lander. First Course in Russian (Part Three)
Boston: D.C. Heath & Company, 1962. — x, 285 pages.
Третья часть курса русского языка для англоговорящих. В учебнике уроки с тридцатого по сорок первый.
Структура уроков дана ниже.
The general principles followed in First Course in Russian, Part One and Part Two have been maintained throughout this text.
A. reading selection . Each lesson contains an average of forty-five lines of simple prose prepared by the authors. Story themes have been chosen to help create interest in learning the language as a means to discovering points of similarity and difference in the lives of English speaking peoples, and Russians. In addition, an attempt has been made to introduce the student to the geography, history, government structure, educational system, national economy, industry, farming and science of the Soviet Union.
The reading selections are supplemented with excerpts from Russian literature and from inoffensive Soviet sources. These excerpts, found in the exercise section, usually complement the reading selection. They supply the student with additional information about the various facets of Soviet life and considerably enrich his recognition vocabulary in Russian.
B. vocabulary . The entire text contains an active vocabulary stock of approximately 1575 words which are divided almost equally among the three volumes.
The Russian language uses prefixes and suffixes to build words and distinguish meanings. First Course in Russian, Part Three devotes two complete lessons to the key prefixes and suffixes used in creating new words.
[b]C./ [b]exercises . Each lesson contains an abundance and variety of exercises based on inflections, grammatical drill, question and answer exercises, dictation, translation from English into Russian, reading exercises, and review exercises. Where possible they reflect the theme of the reading selection.
The master vocabulary includes the vocabulary of First Course in Russian Part One, Part Two and all the new words of Part Three. Similarly, the index of Part Three covers the material in the three volumes.
