Australian readers. Most of this volume is devoted to twentieth-century Australian literature. Although the greater space given to the nineteenth century in the recent Penguin and Oxford literary histories was a very welcome development, reflecting the vast amount of new scholarly research carried out in this area since the 1970s, there was room here for only one chapter specifically devoted to the nineteenth century. Some material from this period, however, is discussed in several of the other chapters.
